How to Verify an Express Entry Job Offer in Canada: A Complete Guide for 2026

A Canadian job offer can be an important part of your immigration journey, but not every offer is valid for Express Entry. Before using a job offer in your immigration profile, it is essential to confirm that the employer is legitimate, the employment terms are genuine and the offer meets the applicable Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements.

Fake job offers and recruitment scams can put your money, personal information and immigration plans at risk. Understanding how to verify an Express Entry job offer can help you make informed decisions and avoid common mistakes.

Why Is It Important to Verify a Job Offer?

A job offer should represent genuine employment, not simply a document created to support an immigration application.

IRCC assesses whether an employer is actively operating, can fulfil the terms of the offer and has a genuine need for the position. Applicants must also be qualified to perform the work and likely to accept and carry out the job.

A job offer that appears genuine on paper may still fail to meet immigration requirements. Verification before submitting your profile or application can help you identify inconsistencies early.

1. Verify the Employer's Identity

Start by checking whether the employer is a legitimate business operating in Canada.

Visit the company's official website and confirm its legal name, business address, contact details and business activities. Compare these details with the information in your job offer.

You can also search the relevant Canadian federal or provincial business registry to confirm whether the business is registered, where applicable.

Check whether the company has a credible business presence, a functioning website and a consistent employment history. For regulated industries, look for relevant licences or registrations.

Remember that registration alone does not prove that a job offer is genuine. A registered company can still issue misleading offers, so further checks are important.

2. Contact the Employer Through Official Channels

Do not rely only on the telephone number or email address written in a job offer.

Find the employer's official contact information independently and contact the human resources or recruitment team. Ask them to confirm that the position exists and that the offer was issued by an authorised representative.

Verify the recruiter's name, designation and relationship with the company. If you receive an offer through a recruitment agency, confirm with the employer that the agency is authorised to recruit for the position.

Be cautious if the recruiter refuses to provide verifiable company information or pressures you to make an immediate payment.

3. Check the Job Offer Letter Carefully

A genuine offer should clearly explain the employment terms. Review the document for missing information, contradictions or unusual conditions.

Check whether it includes:

  • The employer's legal name and contact details

  • Your full name and job title

  • A description of duties and responsibilities

  • The expected employment start date

  • Salary, benefits and any applicable deductions

  • Working hours and employment conditions

  • The name and designation of the authorised person issuing the offer

For job offers used to meet applicable Express Entry requirements, additional conditions may apply. Depending on the program and rules in force, the offer may need to be paid, full-time, non-seasonal and for a specified period.

Do not assume that a document is valid simply because it uses company letterhead or contains a signature.

4. Confirm the Job Meets Express Entry Requirements

Express Entry includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Their eligibility requirements are different.

A job offer is not mandatory for every Express Entry applicant. For example, a job offer is not required for eligibility under the Canadian Experience Class.

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, a qualifying job offer may help meet certain requirements or provide selection points under the applicable rules. For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, a qualifying job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification may be required.

Under the rules currently in force on October 24, 2026, valid job offers used for CRS job offer points generally need to satisfy the applicable LMIA or exemption requirements.

IRCC has announced changes effective November 3, 2026. Under those changes, qualifying job offers will no longer need an LMIA for specified Express Entry program eligibility and CRS points purposes. The offer must still be genuine and meet the relevant requirements.

Always check the official IRCC instructions for the program and the date relevant to your application.

5. Verify the Job Duties and NOC Code

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) system is used to classify occupations in Canada.

Compare the duties described in your job offer with the official NOC occupational description. The job title alone is not enough to establish that an occupation matches a particular NOC code.

Your actual responsibilities, employment conditions and qualifications should be consistent with the position being offered.

If the job duties are vague, unrelated to the stated occupation or inconsistent with the employer's business, ask for clarification before relying on the offer.

6. Check the Salary and Working Conditions

Compare the proposed salary with publicly available wage information for the occupation and location. Canada's Job Bank can help you research typical wages and job requirements.

A salary that is unusually high for the role, without a credible explanation, may warrant additional checks. The same applies to offers that promise guaranteed immigration outcomes in exchange for accepting an unrealistic employment arrangement.

Check whether the stated hours, duties, benefits and employment duration are consistent throughout the offer letter and any supporting documents.

For the announced Express Entry changes effective November 3, 2026, qualifying high-wage job offers may receive 50, 70 or 100 points under the new Labour Market Integration factor, depending on the occupation's median wage compared with the overall Canadian median wage. These points are not available automatically to every job offer.

7. Look for Warning Signs of a Fake Job Offer

Be cautious if you notice any of the following:

  • The recruiter guarantees permanent residence or a visa.

  • You are asked to pay a large fee directly to secure a job offer.

  • The email address imitates a company's domain but does not match its official contact details.

  • The employer cannot be independently verified.

  • The offer contains spelling errors, inconsistent company names or contradictory employment details.

  • You are pressured to share passport details, banking information or other sensitive documents before the employer is verified.

  • The recruiter refuses a direct conversation with the employer.

  • The salary and job conditions seem unrealistic for the position.

These warning signs do not individually prove fraud, but they should prompt further investigation. Never rely solely on a recruiter's promises or a document's appearance.

8. Understand Recruitment Fees and Immigration Promises

Be careful when someone asks you to pay for a guaranteed Canadian job, an LMIA or an assured Express Entry invitation.

An employer or recruiter cannot guarantee that IRCC will approve a permanent residence application. Decisions depend on the applicable eligibility criteria, the candidate's documents and the immigration assessment.

Rules about recruitment fees vary by jurisdiction, and employers generally have obligations under applicable employment and recruitment laws. Verify the rules that apply to the specific arrangement before paying any fee.

If you need paid immigration representation, verify that the representative is authorised to provide the relevant services in Canada.

9. Keep Evidence and Protect Your Personal Information

Save copies of your offer letter, correspondence, recruiter details and any documents used to verify the employer. Keep a record of your questions and the employer's responses.

Avoid sending sensitive personal or financial information until you have established that the employer and recruitment process are legitimate. Use secure channels when sharing documents required for a genuine application.

If you suspect fraud, stop communicating through suspicious channels, do not send further money and consider reporting the incident to the appropriate Canadian authorities.

10. What Should You Do Before Updating Your Express Entry Profile?

Before including a job offer in your profile, make sure that the information is accurate and supported by documentation.

Confirm the employer's name and address, the job title, the relevant NOC code, the start date and any other details required by IRCC. Check the applicable requirements for your Express Entry program.

If your offer does not meet the conditions for CRS job offer points, it may still be relevant to certain program eligibility requirements, depending on your circumstances. These are separate assessments.

IRCC has announced that existing profiles will be recalculated after the changes take effect on November 3, 2026. If you have a job offer that is not included in your profile, review IRCC's instructions and update it as required before the deadline.
