Express Entry Profile Expired: What Should You Do Next?
Creating an Express Entry profile is an important step towards obtaining permanent residency in Canada. However, submitting a profile does not guarantee that you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). If you remain in the pool without receiving an invitation, your profile will eventually expire.
If your Express Entry profile expired, you may be wondering whether you can re-enter the pool, whether your previous CRS score will be retained and what steps you need to take next.
The good news is that an expired profile does not automatically prevent you from applying for Canada PR in the future. You can create and submit a new profile if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
This guide explains why Express Entry profiles expire and what you should do next.
1. Why Does an Express Entry Profile Expire?
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), an Express Entry profile is valid for 12 months from the date it is submitted.
If you do not receive an Invitation to Apply within those 12 months, your profile automatically expires and is removed from the Express Entry pool.
Some common reasons include:
Your CRS score was below the cut-off in invitation rounds.
You were not selected in a general or category-based draw.
Your profile remained in the pool for the full 12-month period.
You did not receive an ITA before the expiry date.
You can check your profile's expiry date through your IRCC secure account.
2. What Happens When Your Express Entry Profile Expires?
When your Express Entry profile expires, it is automatically removed from the system.
Here is what happens next:
Your profile is no longer active in the Express Entry pool.
You will no longer be considered in future invitation rounds through that profile.
Your previous profile information will not automatically transfer to a new profile.
You will need to create and submit a new profile if you want to re-enter the pool.
You will receive a new Express Entry profile number and Job Seeker validation code after submitting a new profile.
Important: IRCC does not currently retain your previous profile information for automatic transfer into a new profile. Save screenshots or copies of your previous profile details before it expires so you can refer to them later.
3. Can You Create a New Express Entry Profile After Expiry?
Yes. You can create a new Express Entry profile after your previous profile expires, provided you still meet the eligibility requirements of at least one Express Entry program.
The three programs managed through Express Entry are:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Before submitting a new profile, check that your qualifications, work experience, language test results and other eligibility requirements are still valid.
You must submit a new profile to enter the pool again. Simply having an expired profile does not put you back into the selection process.
4. Steps to Create a New Express Entry Profile
Follow these steps to re-enter the Express Entry pool after your old profile expires.
Step 1: Check Your Previous Profile Status
Sign in to your IRCC secure account and confirm that your previous profile has expired. Check the expiry notification and keep a record of your old profile details.
Step 2: Review Your Eligibility
Check whether you still qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Your eligibility may change if your language test, Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), work experience or other requirements are no longer valid.
Step 3: Prepare Your Updated Documents
Collect the documents and information required for your new profile, including:
Valid IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core or TEF/TCF language test results, as applicable
Educational Credential Assessment, if required
Employment history and work experience details
Passport and personal information
Proof of funds, where applicable
Details of your spouse or dependent family members, if applicable
Step 4: Sign In to Your IRCC Account
Access your IRCC secure account and follow the instructions to create a new Express Entry profile.
Step 5: Enter Your Updated Information
Complete the profile using your current information. Review your education, work experience, language scores, family details and other relevant information carefully.
Step 6: Submit Your New Profile
Check all the information before submitting. Once your profile is submitted and found eligible, you can enter the Express Entry pool again.
Step 7: Save Your New Profile Details
Keep your new Express Entry profile number and Job Seeker validation code safely. You can use your updated details for future reference and Job Bank-related services.
5. Will Your Previous CRS Score Remain the Same?
Not necessarily. Your CRS score is calculated using the information in your new profile. It may increase or decrease depending on changes in your circumstances.
For example, your score may change because of:
Your age on the date of the new profile
Updated language test results
Additional skilled work experience
Higher educational qualifications
Changes in marital status
A provincial nomination
Changes to other eligible CRS factors
Your previous CRS score is not automatically carried forward. Calculate your score again before submitting the new profile.
6. What Should You Check Before Creating a New Profile?
Before re-entering the Express Entry pool, review these important factors.
A. Language Test Validity
Your approved language test results must be less than two years old when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you apply for permanent residence.
If your results have expired, you may need to take another approved language test.
B. Educational Credential Assessment
If you are using a foreign educational qualification to claim points, check whether your ECA is still valid. An ECA is generally valid for five years for Express Entry purposes.
C. Work Experience
Review your work experience and make sure it still meets the requirements of the program under which you are applying.
For example, the Federal Skilled Worker Program generally requires qualifying skilled work experience within the 10 years before applying, while the Canadian Experience Class requires qualifying Canadian work experience within the three years before applying.
D. Proof of Funds
If you are applying under a program that requires proof of funds, check the latest IRCC settlement fund requirements and update your information accordingly.
E. Personal Information
Update your marital status, passport details, family information, employment details and other personal circumstances before submitting your new profile.
7. Can You Create a New Profile Before the Old One Expires?
You cannot have more than one active Express Entry profile at a time.
If your existing profile has not expired and you want to submit a new one, IRCC instructs you to withdraw the existing profile first.
If your current profile is simply approaching its expiry date, you can save screenshots of the information to make completing the next profile easier.
Do not submit multiple profiles to try to improve your chances of receiving an invitation. Having more than one profile does not increase your chances of selection.
8. What If Your CRS Score Is Still Too Low?
If your previous profile expired because your CRS score was not competitive enough, use the opportunity to review your immigration strategy before submitting another profile.
You can consider the following options:
Improve your language score: Better English or French results may increase your CRS score.
Gain additional skilled work experience: Check whether additional qualifying experience can improve your score or eligibility.
Improve your education: An additional eligible qualification may help strengthen your profile.
Explore Provincial Nominee Programs: A provincial nomination can provide a significant CRS advantage under the applicable rules.
Review category-based selection: Check whether your occupation, language ability or other qualifications match an active Express Entry category.
Check your CRS calculation: Make sure that all eligible points have been included correctly.
A fresh profile is also an opportunity to correct errors or update information from your previous submission.
9. Does an Expired Express Entry Profile Affect Future Canada PR Applications?
No. An expired Express Entry profile does not automatically make you ineligible for future immigration applications.
You can submit a new profile if you meet the relevant program requirements.
However, an expired profile is different from a refused permanent residence application or a finding of inadmissibility. If you have received a refusal, provided incorrect information or have an immigration-related issue, you should review the circumstances separately.
Remember that entering the Express Entry pool does not guarantee an invitation. Selection depends on eligibility, CRS ranking and the requirements of each invitation round.
10. What If You Received an ITA Before Your Profile Expired?
Receiving an Invitation to Apply is different from having an active Express Entry profile.
If IRCC issues you an ITA, you generally have 60 days to submit your complete permanent residence application.
Do not assume that the 12-month profile expiry period gives you additional time to submit an application after receiving an ITA. Follow the deadline shown in your IRCC account.
If you do not submit your permanent residence application within the ITA's validity period, the invitation expires. You will generally need to submit a new Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility requirements to be considered again.
Conclusion
An expired Express Entry profile does not mean that your opportunity to obtain Canada PR is over. If you still meet the eligibility requirements, you can create a new profile and enter the pool again.
Before submitting your new profile, check your language test validity, ECA, work experience, proof of funds and updated CRS score. Use the time to identify opportunities to improve your ranking and prepare accurate supporting information.
A carefully reviewed Express Entry profile can help you avoid mistakes and make the most of your next opportunity to receive an ITA.
